AMMAN - Around one out of six cars tested by authorities over the past two weeks were found to excessively emit harmful gases in violation of environmental regulations, officials said on Monday.
Under a campaign launched earlier this month by the Royal Department for the Preservation of Nature (Rangers) and the Ministry of Environment, 6,340 vehicles were examined for harmful gas emissions.
“A total of 942 of the tested vehicles were fined for producing harmful gases such as sulphur, lead and other fumes, constituting 17 per cent of the total sample,” Ranger Director Brigadier General Nabil Arabiyat said in a statement released yesterday.
